A successful interview comes down to four key things:
1. Positive energy. Hiring managers choose people who are confident, enthusiastic and articulate. So, show up with a “can do” attitude ready to make a connection and show you can do the job.
Remember it’s a conversation, not a monologue, so be present, be curious and be interested.
Know that you have power. An interview is a two-way street. You are interviewing them too so take the posture that says, I’m interested in learning about you and I’m interesting, so listen to me.
2. Be on-point. Make sure that each of your responses is succinct, clear, and on point. Know the key message that you want to convey. Don’t try to provide too much information and don’t try to bundle too many things together. It’s better to be clear and succinct than to ramble and be confusing. Key things you should be prepared to communicate: your strengths, your relevant skills, your key accomplishments, and your knowledge of what’s important in the job.
3. Show you can DO the job. Review the job description, and note every skill and piece of experience that aligns with the duties. Make sure you have responses that illustrate your ability to do the tasks, interact with key personnel, troubleshoot and anticipate problems, and get the job done. Make sure you can demonstrate and articulate what it takes to be successful in the position.
4. Know your audience. Make sure you have researched the backgrounds of the interviewers, the company mission/culture/focus, and what’s affecting their business priorities and plans. Your responses and your questions should show that you know what’s important to them and you have thought about what you need to know to be successful and effective. Use their language. Know their challenges. Show how you fit in. Show how you’ve thought about what you need to learn to get up to speed.
