Imagine having a stack of “wild” cards on your desk or tucked in your pocket. Cards that give you a dose of righteous energy or a boost when you most need it, like when your inner critic is occupying your body and overshadowing the good in you. I hosted a networking event on April Fool’s Day which had me thinking about the extra fool-joker cards in a deck of cards. Rather than cards portraying a fool, I asked people to come up with WILD CARDS that they would add to the deck, specifically to address their own demons and desires. Here are some of the wild cards people created. If they speak to you, add them to your deck. Be sure to create a few of your own and have them nearby for when you need or want to shift your attitude. Wild Cards on Deck… If only I had a poker face. When people meet me, they can see right away that I’m an excitable, personable, positive thinking spirit. I want to have a little more equanimity and show my enthusiasm in deliberate measured doses. I speak with confidence about my career choices. I notice that feelings of doubt come up when the topic is work and career. I hear the should have’s and why didn’t you and shrink as I speak. I want a card that helps me trust my decisions and my professional expertise. I’m not afraid of change. I feel anxiety when it comes to trying out something new. I’m afraid of doors shutting behind me. I want a wild card to remind me that when a door opens, there are more doors yet to open as well. I’m likable. People appreciate me. When someone approaches me, it could be good news. They might like me! I’m adaptable. I’m open and willing to try out new things, and to believe that I can succeed at them! I’ve got a magic flute that I can play just when I start feeling less than. My flute reminds me that I have the recipe to make a whole pie. I don’t have to fight for one little piece. I communicate with big energy from the get-go. Whether I’m interviewing or giving a presentation or meeting new people, I can muster enthusiasm and excitement that’s infectious. People love my energy! People respect my boundaries. When I say I don’t have time to help out, people appreciate my honesty and give me space. I can find a yes today! There is a job or a person interested in me. When I find that yes, I will know it and feel it. I enjoy reaching out to people. I feel renewed and exhilarated when I go to networking events and make cold calls. Those are a few cards that my clients developed. What about you? What do you need on-hand to brighten a dark day or sabotaging energy? While you’re thinking, add these to your deck: Sunshine. Laughter. Daffodils. Smiling Faces. Seeing people in person. There are dark days when you probably need a WILD CARD or two. If you’re looking for a smiling face and friendly conversation, join me at an upcoming event. Take a walk on the wild side. |
