Recruiters know a lot of about looking and leaping to new jobs, and doing so successfully. In honor of Leap Day, here’s sage advice from fabulous nonprofit recruiter Leyna Bernstein of Leadership Search Partners (www.leadershipsearch.com) about how to look.
Mindset: Take on the role of a search consultant
Posture: Take the stance that you’re in the process of discovery. Be interested in them! Pay attention to subtle cues!
Attitude: Consider the interview to be a meeting of two peers in a conversation of discovery. If you take on the attitude of selling yourself, you shift the dynamic, you stop being peers (and you stop being curious).
What to talk about: The organization and why you’re excited about their work! Leyna says the single most common mistake is talking about yourself instead of talking about why you like the organization. The people who get hired are those that really want to work for the organization and know what the organization does.
How to impress them: Do your homework about the organization (website, Guidestar, Linkedin) and show you know who they are, what they’re working on and how they do their work.
