Noticing is a super power.
Noticing and acting upon what you notice can lead to fulfillment and connection. This powerful skill could very likely land you a job or a client or a promotion. It can be the gift that keeps on giving.
Here’s HOW you can use your superpower and WHY it’s SUPER POWERFUL.
NOTICING LEADS TO:
CONVERSATION. Imagine yourself at a networking event, at a party or in a grocery store line. When you use your noticing skills, you can track others’ body language, tone of voice and word choice to seek out people with warmth and enthusiasm. You can tell when people are interested and engaged. You can sharpen your ability to respond as you mirror back what you hear and experience.
GENUINE CONNECTION. You see someone in a restaurant or a café. Perhaps the person is reading a book you’ve read or wearing a sweater you admire. Communicating about something of shared interest (the book or author) or offering a genuine compliment or innocent question can lead to easy connection.
WORK OPPORTUNITIES. Noticing can be gleaning information, researching and recognizing trends. You hear a radio story and learn about a topic. You read an article and gain insights about a new business. You see a restaurant or business opening and see a new trend emerging. In these examples, you notice ideas and insights that you lead to create new project proposals, initiate work partnerships and more.
BEING OF SERVICE. Many people feel invisible; and many long to be seen and acknowledged. When you’re a noticer who tells people what they see and appreciate, you help people feel valued. When you offer a hand to someone -by opening a door, carrying a heavy bag, saying that they still have toothpaste on their mouth (!), you create connection. That’s the power of noticing and ACTING on it!
HELPING YOURSELF. Like a doctor making a diagnosis, noticing is a practice of discernment and inquiry. Use noticing to track what you enjoy doing and build on your strengths and interests. Noticing your energy and mood can help you identify where you can use support, guidance and help; or when it’s time to quit a job.
PEACE OF MIND. The quiet practice of noticing can also be called mindful attention. It quiets the mind, it offers a window into the body, the breath and the nervous system. When you make room to notice yourself – from the body to the breath to the thoughts – you make space for you. Just as you are. Without judgment.
