There are five ingredients to every successful job search: the FIVE T’s!
You have probably read lots of career search wisdom. Sadly, too much of it leaves you passive and reactive, spending your days reading job posts and waiting for an interview. You don’t have enough variety in your days. You don’t get out in the sunlight. You don’t enjoy the search.
After many years of supporting job seekers, I’m offering my gems: the five Ts.
You will see blog posts at the end of each gem to help you work on that T. When you scroll down to the February Interview Club offerings, you will see sessions to help you get to work on 2 T’s: Targeting and Talking about Yourself. Put those dates on your calendar!
Here are the FIVE T’s:
TARGETING. You have to know what you want in a company, in its culture, in the specific tasks you’re doing, and in the mission. The smartest job seekers have CRITERIA for what they want and they REACH OUT TO COMPANIES AND HIRING MANAGERS DIRECTLY. They aren’t passively looking at job postings and waiting for their dream job to show up.https://lauraparadisecoaching.com/job-satisfaction-criteria/
TALKING ABOUT YOURSELF. When the interviewer says, tell me about yourself, you want to know what you’ll say so you can speak with grace, confidence and clarity. You best have an idea what is important to share and what is best left unsaid. Hmmm. What are they after when they ask this question? Hmmm. What happens if you’re modest or uncomfortable being in the spotlight?Hmmm. What should I emphasize when I talk about myself?! https://lauraparadisecoaching.com/do-you-hate-branding/
TUNE IT UP or TONE IT DOWN. What’s the truth about you in an interview? Are you a mumbler, a rambler, an overzealous talk too much person or in your face trying to impress and bowling them over? Most of us have to either tune it up or tone it down. Know what kind of impression you tend to make and adjust up or down so you connect. In voice, body and content. https://lauraparadisecoaching.com/when-do-you-flub-it/
TAKE TIME. MAKE TIME. How the heck are you using your time? You have to be committed and put time into researching companies, applying for jobs, prepping for interviews and, yes, networking. You have to get better at doing written tasks FASTER and WITH CARE. You have to block out time on your calendar for specific tasks so that you can stay accountable and get things done. You need to invest time and use it well. https://lauraparadisecoaching.com/get-things-done/
TOXINS. People don’t often say this but you might need to detox to be an effective job seeker. You know if you’re carrying baggage from an old job or bad boss. You know if you’ve got limiting beliefs or fears and doubts that won’t let go. It’s important to put detoxing and self-care on your to-do list. Make sure to vent, breathe air into your lungs, move your body and get out of the house. You will be a better candidate when you’re able to feel energized and genuinely enthusiastic about your next opportunity. https://lauraparadisecoaching.com/job-search-stuck-past-wisdom-future/
Last but not least, remember to spend time with other people while you’re in a job search mode. Coaches, friends, fellow job seekers … all of us can help out and lend support.
To your success!
