When it comes to you giving you,
Do you take on posture of giving?!
Do you feel generous?
Do you feel excited and hopeful about how others will respond?
Or, do you take on a posture that diminishes your value?
This new year, choose to value WHAT YOU GIVE, especially when what you are giving is YOU.
The giving spirit of the holidays is giving with aliveness, joy, generosity, excitement and care.
The giving spirit when giving of yourself is all of those things in addition to dignity and self-respect, generosity and humility. Most of us have a weird tape playing in our heads that says when we give of ourselves, we can’t truly be in the spirit of giving because we want something in return (a job, a client, a promotion, recognition, appreciation, attention). We strangely call it selling ourselves. No, not right! We are not cheapening ourselves by downplaying our value. We are holding ourselves with dignity, honestly knowing that we have value and letting it show through posture, words, energy.
Isn’t giving of yourself the best gift of all? not one to be shy about or downplaying?!
Try on these qualities to help you embody YOUR VALUE:
DIGNITY
GENEROSITY
HUMILITY
Take on each quality IN YOUR BODY for a moment as you envision yourself meeting someone new, going to an interview, working on your resume. Can you feel yourself sitting up straighter, walking taller, relaxing and breathing? I hope so!
This is your year to practice living in the spirit of self-worth and bringing that spirit to how you connect with others. Because you WILL connect and you will be seen for your value.
I learned recently that one of the biggest predictors of economic success in the US is non-academic skills. You got that right – not hard skills and training but interpersonal skills. In the Hidden Brain podcast on the American Dream (12/91/9), https://www.npr.org/2019/12/09/786469762/zipcode-destiny-the-persistent-power-of-place-and-education kindergarten students that mastered social skills and soft skills like persuasion and conflict resolution went on to be the most successful adults!
You giving your value is you showing you know how to play well with others, describing how you deal with challenging situations, communicating how your unique charms like sensing someone else’s needs and pitching specifically to them… showing how who you are as a person and relating to others … makes a measurable difference in your economic success.
We are always in a time of giving. We can choose to be in the spirit of giving, of ourselves, with dignity, generosity and humility, knowing our value and letting it show.
Make 2020 the year that your value is clear and honest and available for others to see and utilize.
