When Accountability Works

January 12, 2017 By Laura Paradise

People often hire a coach or find a buddy when they want accountability.

Here’s what I know about when accountability works. I hope these tips work for you.

You’ve got an audience!

Accountability works …

When it’s gentle and firm.

When it’s time-limited. You set a timer. You hit start. You don’t get out of your chair until the buzzer sounds.

When it’s bite-sized. Five minutes of concentrated time without interruption is a lot. Fifteen minutes of writing time without email or text is a solid chunk. Thirty minutes could be a blog post, a cover letter, a job application or a writing sample.

When you’re in community. You’re all in, you’re a team, everyone on board with the intention to get work done.

When you’ve said your goals out loud. You say what you plan to get done. No more silent thoughts. By stating your goals, you’ve stepped into action.

When you sit in front of an audience. The fabulous web conference where everyone can see each other. You are visible. You have witnesses.

When you make it a consistent practice. All of you show up at the same time for the same shared purpose week after week. You know what you’re there to accomplish. You know that you’re committed. You know that you mean business.

After a while, the work time is part of your rhythm. You look forward to it. You know it’s effective. You know it works.

I just launched a new accountability program, Write to Work, in my coaching practice. All of us are committed to getting write done that gets us work whether that’s clients, a job offer or a sold-out workshop. Contact me at lparadise.coach@gmail.com if you want to learn more and get accountability and support.
